Ashley studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama Opera School, first as a répétiteur and then as the 2018/19 conducting fellow studying with Dominic Wheeler. His studies were generously supported by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and the Roderick Bryson Memorial Trust. Whilst at Guildhall, Ashley was répétiteur for productions of Dialogues des Carmélites (Poulenc), A Dinner Engagement (Berkeley) and for numerous opera scenes. He also worked as assistant conductor and chorus master on A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Britten), Venus and Adonis (Blow) and Aminta e Fillide (Handel).
Whilst at Trinity Laban, Ashley worked as répétiteur and assistant conductor for the world-premiere of Banished (McNeff) and répétiteur and continuo for L’Incoronazione di Poppea (Monteverdi). Ashley was also the musical director of the student-run opera group, PuzzlePiece Opera, and worked as répétiteur and conductor for abridged productions of Così fan tutte (Mozart), Die Zauberflöte (Mozart), Die Fledermaus (J. Strauss) and Acis and Galatea (Handel).
Ashley works as a répétiteur for Glyndebourne Opera House as the pianist for their Youth Opera programme, where he was worked numerous world-premieres. These include Imago (Gough), Lovers Walk (Styles), Tycho’s Dream (Styles), Nothing (Bruce), Belongings (Murphy) and Agreed (Moody). Most recently, Ashley was the répétiteur for the world-premiere of Eye to Eye (Skempton/Wallen) which was performed as part of the Brighton Festival 2019.
Ashley enjoys a long relationship with Blackheath Halls Opera, working as répétiteur and assistant conductor for Carmen (Bizet) and Der Freischütz (Weber) and as organist for their 2016 production of Noye’s Fludd (Britten). In summer 2019, Ashley was assistant conductor for their production of La Belle Hélène (Offenbach).
In 2018, Ashley joined Waterperry Opera Festival for their inaugural season as the musical director for their critically-acclaimed production of Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park. This summer, Ashley and director Rebecca Meltzer revived this production for their second season. Other opera highlights include répétiteur for English translation productions of Rigoletto (Verdi) and Carmen (Bizet) with Matchbox Opera, regular dep répétiteur for the world premiere of The Nose (Latanka) with the Royal Opera House Youth Opera Company, répétiteur and conductor for Deep Waters (McDowall) and scenes from Hänsel und Gretel (Humperdinck) both for the Summer Music on the Shannon Festival in Ireland. In spring 2017, Ashley was the répétiteur and musical director for Clockwork Opera's production of Une Education Manquée (Chabrier), performed in a brand-new English translation by director Thomas Holland.
Other highlights for summer 2019 include répétiteur Fantasio (Offenbach) at Garsington Opera and répétiteur for Gerald Barry’s The Intelligence Park, a co-production between the Royal Opera House and Music Theatre Wales.
